New Beginnings with Jazz & Her Shadow, at Black Bay Park

When Jazz and I first connected about her session, she shared that she had recently moved to North Idaho for work. As beautiful as the area is, settling into a new town can feel a little lonely at times. Like many women who’ve found themselves starting over somewhere new, Jazz was looking for a spark of joy to brighten her days.

That’s when she met Shadow, a 6-month-old black German Shepherd puppy who changed everything. One afternoon, Jazz went to see a litter of puppies, hoping their playful energy might lift her spirits. She wasn’t expecting to find her perfect companion—but Shadow had other plans. With his soulful eyes and gentle presence, he stole her heart in an instant, and the rest is history.

Since then, Shadow has become her constant sidekick. He tags along to her favorite coffee shop, already behaving like a young gentleman, save for the occasional protective side-eye toward strangers he’s not so sure about. For a pup who’s only six months old, he carries himself with a sweet mix of loyalty and playfulness that makes him impossible not to love.

For their session, we met on a cool summer morning at Black Bay Park in Post Falls, one of my favorite hidden gems for dog photography in North Idaho. The tall grasses glowed in the early sunlight, wrapping the whole park in a soft golden haze—the perfect backdrop for their story.

Like any German Shepherd, Shadow can be a little selective with new people, but once he warms up, his personality shines. And Jazz had already told me his absolute favorite thing in the world (besides her, of course) is playing fetch. So much of our morning was spent with his beloved ball: bounding through the grass, ears flopping, paws flailing, and proudly trotting back with his prize. Between throws, he also discovered the drawstring on the treat bag—a clever little trick that had us both laughing.

But beyond the playfulness, what struck me most was the way Shadow’s eyes never drifted far from Jazz. Even in all his puppy energy, there’s an unmistakable connection there—the trust, the devotion, the joy of knowing they belong to each other.

For Jazz, finding Shadow turned what could have been a lonely fresh start into something full of joy, adventure, and companionship. And for Shadow, he found not just a home, but his person—the one who adores him every bit as much as he adores her.

This session at Black Bay Park was the perfect way to capture the start of their journey together. Shadow may still be a bay, but it’s clear he and Jazz have already built something special. Their story is proof that sometimes the best things in life find us exactly when we need them most. I hope their story inspires anyone new to the area to get out there and enjoy the adventure.
