Photographing Reactive & Rescue Dogs

A Compassionate Approach

Being a dog parent is an incredible journey, but when you have a reactive dog, it can also feel isolating. I know this firsthand—because I have one too.

My dog is excitement-reactive, which means missing out on a lot of fun dog-friendly activities—like "Photos with Santa," the dog park, or brunch at a pet-friendly café. Watching other dogs and their owners enjoy those experiences can be heartbreaking. The world isn’t always built for dogs like ours.

That’s why I’m so passionate about creating a safe, judgment-free photography experience designed with reactive and rescue dogs in mind. With patience, understanding, and a completely flexible approach, I create sessions where your pup can just be—without pressure, without fear, and without being asked to do anything they’re not ready for.

Understanding Reactive and Rescue Dogs

Reactive dogs aren’t being "bad"—they simply experience the world more intensely. Whether it’s excitement, nervousness, or overstimulation, their emotions can come out in big ways, like barking, lunging, or needing extra space. Rescue dogs, especially those with difficult pasts, may be more cautious and take longer to feel safe in new situations. Rather than expecting them to fit into a traditional photo session, I shape the session around them. The goal isn’t just to take pictures—it’s to create an experience where they feel comfortable and confident enough to let their true personality shine.

Seeing your dog the way you do...

"We just read your post and I’m bawling!! 🥹😭 Thank you so much for capturing our story and for seeing the magic in our very special dogs. Your images are truly to give us a lifetime of memories of the BEST day!! 🤎🩶"

A Stress-Free, Dog-Centered Photography Session

Because I’ve been in your shoes, I know how important it is to make sure your dog feels safe, respected, and never pushed beyond their comfort zone. Here’s how I do that:

A Personalized Session Just for Your Dog

Before the session, we’ll chat about your dog’s needs—their likes, dislikes, and triggers—so I can create a plan that works for them. Whether they need a quiet environment, more space, or extra time to settle in, I’ll tailor everything to their comfort level.

A Calm, Low-Stimulation Location & Time

Instead of crowded parks or busy city streets, I choose peaceful, open spaces where your dog can feel secure. Whether it’s a quiet field, a private backyard, or a secluded nature trail, we’ll find the perfect setting for them. We'll meet during times when the distractions are minimal, usually early morning or weekday afternoon.

Letting a Confident Housemate Take the Lead

Many reactive dogs live with a more easygoing, confident dog. If that’s the case for your pup, we can start the session by focusing on their housemate. This allows the shy or reactive dog to watch, assess, and get used to the situation—without any pressure or expectations.

Patience, Flexibility & Positive Reinforcement

If your dog needs breaks, we’ll take them. If they need space, I’ll give it to them. If they’re feeling confident and playful, we’ll capture that energy! There’s no set timeline, no pressure—just a relaxed, go-at-their-pace experience.

Help Your Dog Feel Comfortable

A little preparation can go a long way in making the session as smooth as possible:

Every Dog Deserves to Be Celebrated

Just because your dog can’t participate in traditional pet-friendly outings doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be celebrated. Their journey—their quirks, their heart, their resilience—is just as worthy of capturing.

I know what it’s like to feel like the world wasn’t built for your dog. But this session? This space? It is built for them.

If you’ve been waiting for the right time to capture your dog’s personality in a way that feels safe and natural, I’d love to help. Let’s create something beautiful together.

Ready to book a session that works for your pup? Let’s chat! I’d love to hear all about your dog and create an experience that lets them shine.

Proudly serving the pet parents of Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, Spokane Valley and the communities around North Idaho.
